from long ago

Hi,

Could anybody tell me what does "from long ago" mean and, mainly, how and when am I to use it? I came across it in an article titled : "a tale from long ago" and I can understand its meaning there but I´m not quite sure I know how to use it. I mean, can I say "I know him from long ago"?

Please help.
